Happy New Year! So far, in 2014 in room 19, we have been quite busy! We have continued reading our novel, The Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark; started learning all about matter in science; finished up our math unit on decimals and began factoring; and in social studies, we are focused on learning all about the constitution and those involved in the foundation of our country.
We are currently on Chapter 21 in Kingdom Keepers. Right now, students are all filled with curiosity and wonder if the 5 Disney DHIs can conquer The Overtaker, Maleficent. In response to reading, we have made literary brochures; completed character maps; problem and solution charts; and even created our own comic strips based on the book. It truly is an adventurous tale, that we are all enjoying!

In science, we started Unit 4: What is Matter? While learning all about solids, liquids, and gases, we have also explored how these states of matter can endure physical and chemical changes. We spent an afternoon conducting "Lab Day" in class, rotating among 7 various stations with different chemicals and ingredients to experiment with. Our goal, to determine what type of change occurred when two or more items were put together in one container. We made goo, watched the chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda, dissolved sugar cubes in water, and more!
In addition, on January 16, we had "Science for Breakfast"! How can you eat science for breakfast? We had pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon! For the morning, we constructed a couple unique Interactive Science Notebook pages, complete with a mixing bowl on one page and cooked pancakes on the other. On each of these pages, we recorded density, volume, mass, physical and chemical properties and changes, and observations. It was a great morning, filled with TONS of science! And a special thank you goes out to all of the parents who sent in donated items like chocolate chips, sprinkles, fresh fruit, whipped cream, and more! Thanks to Mrs. Lazar for helping us prep, cook, and make science for breakfast..and the bacon and eggs!!
So far, 2014 has been fun for my Superstars in room 19, otherwise known as The Swamp! We are going to continue to have fun while learning and work hard to prepare for the FCAT coming up in April!
